AT A CHILD’S LEVEL

The Cloaked Monk’s, http://cloakedmonk.com/, MarchChallenge prompt for the 22st is, “Being at a child’s level.”

This one taxed me. Try as I might, I could not make the emotional link I usually find for a decent poem, so this will have to do.

AT A CHILD’S LEVEL
by Mike Patrick

Did you ever kneel
beside a happy child,
and try to understand
what’s behind that mystic smile?

A different world is waiting
behind their eager eyes,
as they see wondrous sights
adult logic oft denies.

Dragons, knights and castles
are well within their reach.
Arcane words of wisdom
are sprinkled in their speech.

We need only look and listen
from the child’s point of view,
to fully understand
the reality of Pooh.

My apologies. As much as I love my grandchildren, I should have been able to come up with something better than this. Maybe it was that ‘child’s level’ thing.

I found this hard too, but again you captured the subject with mastery. I think why it is difficult to see things from a child’s point of view, is that we are invertible altered as adults, or “life experiences” that we can never fully capture its essence, even though we can revel in watching it expressed in our children.

As long as you can see the mystic smile and long for the mystery contained within, then you can find the child’s level. My friend, I think you are too hard on yourself!
