THIS DAY FOUND ME

For some reason, I don’t have a good site for a Friday poetry prompt (suggestions welcome). That allowed a free day, and what better on a free day than free verse.

THIS DAY FOUND ME

This day found me dreaming
of my childhood on the farm;
remembering the feel of the sun’s heat
on youth’s abandon.

No aches, no pains;
everything works. Ignoring the heat
and running across the north field,
carrying a fly rod
and my dismal, hand-tied flies.

No matter if the fish were biting,
I’d thrash the water for a couple hours
before stripping off and jumping in;
feeling the cool water defeat the day’s heat.

I relished the time alone.
Just me and my thoughts,
thoughts without responsibility,
without worry. Free to go where they would.

I never noticed the time passing,
yet it did.

Years slipped by. Life happened.
A job, a wife, a home and children
brought responsibility
and ended youth’s abandon.
It was all good.
It brought me to this place,
this wonderful place,
with memories to cherish.
The place where this day found me.

  1. This felt so familiar…those wonderful days of summer abandon that you wish you could recapture.
    Have you posted on Facial Expressions yet. I haven’t been on in a few days. As for finding more sonnets on my blog, I don’t think you will. The form terrifies me. :0)

      I’m not sure about facial expressions. Often I just follow the link of a friend’s posting and use the prompt there.
      By the way, sonnets are fun, and yours was great.

    Ahhhhh, how utterly wonderful. Now I’m going to be day dreaming of times gone past. 🙂

  3. As for Friday…try One Stop Poetry’s “Friday Poetically” hosted by Brian Miller. It’s one of my favorites. It’s at http://onestoppoetry.com
    I’m on my way there in a few minutes.

  4. I enjoyed your dreaming day. Here’s a site with links to prompt sites for every day of the week. http://poetryblogroll.blogspot.com/p/other-wonderful-poetry-communities.html

    Hello Mike.
    You describe perfectly a time so many of us can relate to…a time to do as we pleased, before the responsibilities of life & love took over. At least you’re in a settled place now with wonderful memories to hold on to.
    Nicely done!.

    If you like to read/write romantic fiction, then you may want to visit/join me & a whole bunch of other talents over at the new Friday night hot spot…Romantic Friday Writers. We (members & non-members) link up every Friday. Check us out here:

    Great piece of poetry and that’s a glorious red over the sea 🙂

  11. Nara Malone says:

    I just wanted to say you should put G-man’s Friday 55 on your list for Friday. There’s no official prompt and technically it’s flash fiction but to tell a story well in 55 words you need to employ poetic devices. It’s a large freindly group and participants are great about giving feedback.

    • Mike Patrick says:

      Thank you, Nara. I will take a look at it. So far I’ve held my writing to poems except for under my The Cop Out tab. Not sure I’ve ever written anything in 55 words.

    Came over here from Poets United. Am glad I did. Such a lovely poem, tempered with warmth of the sun, your childhood, a hearth..

    regards,

    You describe the freedom of childhood so eloquently in this, especially as an adult looking back wistfully towards childhood :))
