The Cloaked Monk’s MarchChallenge prompt for today is “Patterns.” There has been so much going on the last few days at the Patrick domicile, I have pretty much been posting junk. I think things are caught up for a while so it was time to do a little work, and patterns turned into work for me. I had to do a little more research than usual, that’s why I’m late getting this one posted.

by Mike Patrick

Walking across the desert
in the southern coastland of Peru
one finds hundreds of shallow trenches
zigzagging across the view.

The reddish brown surface
was carefully scraped away
leaving the lighter soil beneath
exposed to the light of day

No one knows who made them,
or why they placed them there,
but there is much more to meet the eye
when viewed from in the air

In the early 1930s,
When air travel was still new,
Pilots oft were startled
when appeared a geoglyphic zoo.

All those random trenches
into patterns did array,
creating magic images
in the rocks and stone and clay.

A hummingbird and monkey
stretched for kilometers down below,
while a spider and a lizard
added to the show.

Birds and fish and reptiles
etched in desert stone,
over hundreds of kilometers
their images had grown.

What purpose did they serve?
The theories still abound.
Though the artists are, for centuries gone,
their art remains, etched into the ground.

A large part of their creation
is the mystery that came to be.
Why did an ancient culture build
a marvel they could never see?
