NO WORDS

A new poetry friend reminded me of a poem I posted on a writer’s site. My goal on this blog is to display my best works (I have buckets of rejects), and perhaps it qualifies.

NO WORDS
by Mike Patrick

My father wept as the flag passed by;
At rigid attention he stood.
He had no words to explain just why;
Only veterans understood.

I watched my bride walk down the aisle,
And my words did surely fail.
There were no words for what I felt
As I softly raised her veil.

As I looked down at my just born child,
So much I had to say,
But emotion choked my very air
And stole my words away.

I stand above the fresh filled grave,
A victim now of fate.
At last I say what needed said,
But the words came way too late.

    Heart-rending, and full of truth.

    Mike this is truly a wonderful poem. The sentiments say a lot.

    I’ve started a kind of fun thing too call The Blog of the Week and you’re my first. Glad you sent me a link to your place.

    Keep writing

    This is one of the very best poems i have ever read.

      Wow! Thank you. The praise every poet wants to hear, but me thinks the lady doth go too far. I am but a humble poet . . . much more humble after your words, but I visit the masters regularly and only dream of ascending those heights.
      Thank you again.

      Thank you Dishilicious. No Words is one of my favorites. Sadly, we often write from experience, and that is what makes this one work. Unfortunately, it appears to be a universal experience.

    I’ll add my “WOW” to the list….as someone who often finds it hard to verbally express the words I want to say, I can relate to this poem…..but I have also learned that it is way too important to let opportunity pass without saying what needs to be said. I hope many will read this poem and learn the value of not letting opportunities pass them by, as well.

    Well done, Mike!

      No Words is one of my favorites, I believe I became more emotional while writing it than anything else I’ve written. Also because it always reminds me of my father.
